Greek Yogurt sold at Union Street Market!

You may have heard about Greek Yogurt and wonder what the stir is about!

...Is it more beneficial? How does it taste? What is so extraordinary about it?

In comparison to its American counterpart, it is thicker due to it being strained, but has DOUBLE the protein per serving! Additionally, it has ZERO grams fat, no high fructose corn syrup, and its' calcium and probiotics (good bacteria which promote healthy gut flora) still pack the nutritional punch of regular yogurt.

But where can I find it?!

It's sold in a variety of flavors on campus at the new Union Street Market (a store on the ground floor of the Cedar building of new appt. housing; corner of 10th & Union St., right across from Eigenmann). Stop by Monday - Friday between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., or on Sat. & Sun. between Noon and 7 p.m!

healthy weight...healthy knees!

Knee trouble got you down? Choose healthy foods and limit excess calories from sugar-sweetened beverages (soda, sweet tea) to help you lose weight.  For every 1 pound you lose, you remove FOUR pounds of stress from your knees!

Tis the season for dieting. Instead, focus on eating more nutritious foods!

One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to lose weight. Cardio machines at the SRSC are full, and students have visions of spring break on their minds! At any given time, 47% of U.S. adults are dieting. Unfortunately, 64% gain back more than they lost. The reason? Research shows that skipping meals makes weight loss harder.

Deprivation makes us crave foods and slows our metabolism. The best way to shed excess weight is to adopt healthful habits...eating healthier foods, avoiding high-fat snacks, limiting fast-food, and being active! Eating fruits/veggies, lean proteins, & whole-grains allows you to fill up at a fraction of the calories. And when you’re full, you’re less likely to feel deprived!

Nutrition tips, RPS Updates, and MORE!!

I'd like to invite IU students to use this blog to enhance communication between you and RPS Dining! Many of you may not have realized that RPS has a dietitian! I have great interest in working with students, and will share with you the latest updates on dining initiatives, new products being sold in our C-stores, and provide you with nutrition tips to help you take steps towards a healthy lifestyle.

RPS also has a dietetic technician on staff named Susan Herr, DTR. She prepares Eat Right menus, line cards which list recipe ingredients and allergens, and works hard to maintain our Net Nutrition database. The picture above was taken of Susan and I at the Kidney Foundation booth at the American Dietetic Ass. Food & Nutrition Conference this Fall in Boston. Though IU does not have a talking robot like the one in the photo, we hope this blog helps us relate to your generation! Stay tuned...
